LAWBOX: CITIZENSHIP LAWYERS
Have you lived in Canada as a permanent resident for 3 years or more? If so, you may be eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship.
Prior to October 11, 2017, it was mandatory for permanent residents applying for citizenship to prove that they had actually been present in Canada for a minimum of 183 days a year during 4 of the last 6 years. Since October 11, 2017, this requirement no longer exists, meaning that if you have been in Canada for three of the last five years, you are eligible for Canadian citizenship. Similarly, every day spent in Canada in the five years prior to obtaining your permanent residence will count for half a day up to a year.
In addition, and still before October 11, 2017, persons aged 14 to 64 had to meet language requirements and demonstrate general knowledge of Canada. Since then, these requirements have been limited to people aged 18 to 54 years.
